Notably, there have been many recent-world events that have
boggled the masses. Is the government
really run by man-eating lizards? No, that is your sibling’s best friend.
Don’t be rude. Oh, don’t have a sibling? You do now. Come on, make up. Well,
not literally. Just hug the lizard. They don’t mean you any harm. See, they
like you already? Isn’t that just the sweetest thing ever? It wasn’t so hard.
Wait, and now the not-man-eating lizard is opening their
mouth, and…clamped their maws voraciously over your admittedly round head. For
some reason you are now hovering six feet above the air…wait, now no one can
see you. What’s left of your most likely terrified face is confronted with the
sheer horrors of nothingness.
Oops, and now you’re dead. Well, it was an honest mistake.
But not all man-eating lizards are bad, no, absolutely not!
Really, how rude! Don’t you know it’s quite rude to die two
minutes after meeting a friend of a family member, especially one so upstanding
such as a giant, hideous green man-eating lizard?
What’s that? Oh, so that’s not what’s bothering you? Well,
it could be the mutant toaster uprising that is set to occur. It’s already
happening. I hear knocking-anddd…
Sorry for that rather lengthy pause. Rest assured; there is
nothing to fear!
Hm, perhaps I should just state it. Afterall, life really is
an unending whirlwind of terror and regrets, and there is just so many wonderful things to be fearful of.
I really shouldn’t be discussing such mundane events. As
anyone that has ever gone through my 12 year old version’s search history has
said, “What the heck is wrong with you?”
Of course, like those who manage to cross the bridge from the terrors of
childhood and into the bright future of college applications and even more
regrets, I went from Googling, “What are the plans of our malevolent lizard
overlords”, and “Animal Crossing Let’s Plays” to writing fanfiction. Granted, I
only wrote two in my whole entire life, but they were still met with superb
feedback such as, “What is this?”, and “No, seriously, what is this? I can’t
read your handwriting!”
Of course, since I was the only one who read my fanfictions, along with my past
and future counterparts, I may have been a bit biased. But weren’t we all
during that stupendous time in our lives?
Well now, I forgot what my original plans for this post
were, soooo, if I don’t have anything up on Saturday it was the toaster.
Anyway, since we were on the topic of giant lizard people
let us now go to…the six identical [thankfully non-flesh eating] lizard
brothers. Yes, I am sure most of you who are actually reading this [minus my
past and future self, or your past and future selves] Osomatsu-san.
First of all, what is Osomatsu-san
about? It’s about a family of li-
Oh, you already know that? Fine, let’s talk about its debut.
Osomatsu-kun debuted in 1962. Osomatsu-kun
was a manga created by Fujio Akatsuka.
Akatsuka’s Osomatsu-kun revolved around the sextuplet brothers, Osomatsu,
Karamatsu, Choromatsu, Ichimatsu, Jyushimatsu, and Todomatsu, and the various
shenanigans and mishief they got into.
It received anime adaptations in the 60s and 80s. However,
unlike the 60s adaptation, the brothers took a backseat to the show’s ensemble
darkhorses, Iyami and Chibita. Iyami, a con-artist with somewhat large teeth,
and Chibita, a rival of the sextuplets, would often try to con the Matsuno
brothers.
While Osomatsu-kun was tremendously beloved in Japan,
it was virtually unknown in the Western hemisphere up until the re-imagined
story of the six brother as liza-
-Older gentlemen attempting to find their places in life. Its
new incarnation, Osomatsu-san, serves
as a sequel to ‘kun.’ It was brought back as celebration for Akatsuka’s 80th
birthday. However, while the series would have certainly brought in viewership
for its nostalgic undertones and off-the-wall humor, it became one of the most
popular anime in recent years. Even the show’s producers had no idea how
popular it would become.
Well, quite a few people (including viewers) wonder just how
and why Osomatsu-san got so popular
in such a short amount of time. Of course, nostalgia and just general interest
are factors. Certainly the amount of well-known voice actors working for the
anime are why Osomatsu-san became an
extremely common name throughout the internet.
Osomatsu: Plain ol' smile
Karamatsu: Eyebrows
Choromatsu: Smallest eyes, >:
Ichimatsu: Somewhat messy hair, half-lidded eyes, frown
Jyushimatsu: 8D
Todomatsu: Usually seen with his cell phone. :3 face
Overall, there is not one reason as to why the series is so
beloved. Perhaps it’s nostalgia, or studio, voice actors, witty writing, or
extensively unique characters. What makes Osomatsu-san so amazing is how
distinct one can make six identical brothers-by the end of the first cour one
could tell the difference between, well, the oldest, Osomatsu, and youngest,
Todomatsu.
Osomatsu is associated with red (each brother’s trademark
color is highlighted in their hair, for example), with a grin plastered on his
face eyes in comparison to Todomatsu’s large eyes and “cat-smile”-> :3
Still, some are wondering why the anime has become a hit
among girls, particularly those in the older demographic. Well, many are
primarily surprised over how popular the series is with fujoshi, despite it
lacking the typical bishounen-tropes commonly seen in animes such as Uta No Prince Sama (Such as the now
banned first episode. However, there is ‘F6’).
Red: Osomatsu
Blue: Karamatsu
Green: Choromatsu
Purple: Ichimatsu
Yellow: Jyushimatsu
Pink: Todomatsu
If you can't tell, Totty's my fave!
